FAQ
How does vitamin D help with immune function?
There have been several studies that have linked low levels of vitamin D to increased infection, and we now understand that vitamin D modulates both our innate and adaptive immune responses. This also ties into our understanding of the role of the seasons in our fluctuating immune susceptibility. The cold weather we experience in winter doesn't inherently cause an increase in flu, but rather the shorter days and reduced sun exposure result in one thing - significantly less vitamin D - a biological breeding ground for disease susceptibility.
What are the effects of a vitamin C deficiency
A lack of vitamin C ultimately leads to impaired immunity and a higher susceptibility to infections. Vitamin C cannot be endogenously synthesized by humans and must therefore be obtained from an external source (diet or supplementation). In addition, vitamin C is a water-soluble compound, which means it is poorly retained by the body and must be taken regularly.
Why does a high training load make you susceptible to diseases?
Highly active individuals are prone to disease due to the increased physiological stress their bodies are subjected to, as well as the depletion of resources and energy needed for muscle repair. The supplementation of vitamin C and zinc ensures that exercise does not deplete the range of nutrients needed to maintain healthy immunity.
How does zinc actually work?
When a virus or bacterium enters your body, zinc travels to key cells that help fight infection and ensure inflammation doesn't get out of hand. Zinc deficiency impairs the production and efficiency of immune cells, leading to reduced defenses and an increased risk of inflammation. Adequate zinc levels mean your immune system is firing at optimal levels even when your body is exhausted from exercise, preventing illness and resulting lost exercise time.
